What is Social Entrepreneurship?
J. Gregory Dees summarized that “Social entrepreneurs play the role of change agents in the social sector, by: Adopting a mission to create and sustain social value (not just private value), Recognizing and relentlessly pursuing new opportunities to serve that mission, Engaging in a process of continuous innovation, adaptation, and learning, Acting boldly without being limited by resources currently in hand, and Exhibiting heightened accountability to the constituencies served and for the outcomes created.” Samer Abu-Saifan stated that “Social entrepreneurship is the field in which entrepreneurs tailor their activities to be directly tied with the ultimate goal of creating social value.” In Mathew Emmanuel Pineda article, there is a business-oriented meaning of social entrepreneurship: “From a business perspective, social entrepreneurship follows the groundwork of entrepreneurship and business management. Most if not all social entrepreneurs and their social enterprises use innovative business models or frameworks borrowed from management and organisational theory to create social value.” From the interpretation of social entrepreneurship, I concluded that different from other entrepreneurships, social entrepreneurship is an innovative organization to increase social value rather than gain benefit for themselves. They add operations of organization and social value together and incorporate them.

In my field, I would like to take the Toms as an example. Toms is a for-profit company which was founded in 2006. The company’s headquarters is in California and it designs and sells shoes, eyewear, coffee, apparel, and handbags. Blake Mycoskie, who is one of the founders of Toms, noticed lots of children running with no shoes on when he was doing volunteer work in Argentina. Based on this reason, Mycoskie formed Toms with the intent of donating shoes to impoverished children. When Toms sells a pair of shoes from the company, a new pair of shoes would be given to a child in need. This business operation model is known as the “one for one concept” model. Currently, the company uses this model to sell other products, such as eyewear, coffee, and bags. When Toms sells eyewear, part of the profit will be used to help people save or restore eyesight. In 2014, Toms cooperates with other organizations to offer 140 liters of safe water to the world for each purchase of TOMS Roasting Co. coffee. In 2015, Toms launched TOMS Bag Collection to provide birth skills training for woman to help them practice safe childbirth. To the date, Toms has donated over 60 million pairs of shoes, restored eyesight to over 400,000 people, and given over 335,000 weeks of safe water. Besides, Toms made 15 investments in other social entrepreneurs to support them develop.
As an accounting student, managing the company's finances would be a key responsibility for my future career. The first reason that I choose Toms is that the company shows a great example of reasonable distributing cost and profit to non-profit operations and for-profit operation. Toms sets up an “one-for-one” business model and this model is used by over 100 companies. For social entrepreneurship, this model encourages lots of people to choose social entrepreneurship as their career path because the career creates fulfillment in the workplace. Another reason that I choose Toms is that the company established a reciprocal system. Since lots of people think social entrepreneurship refers to “ineffective” or “unprofitable business”. Toms indicates that a for-profit company can also improve the social environment and solve social problems. For a person in general, the company provides people with a simple and fast channel to help others. They just need to purchase a pair of shoes in Toms, and Toms will donate shoes to others. This model encourages everyone in the world to help people that are in need. The company incentive more and more people and company to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues.
